NYCC 2025: Jason Aaron And Kewber Baal Take ‘Thundarr The Barbarian’ On His Dynamite Journey

Thundarr the Barbarian finally has its creative team.

Just ahead of New York Comic Con 2025, Dynamite made a pretty exciting announcement: writer Jason Aaron and artist Kewber Baal will be the leads on the long-awaited comic book based on the early 1980s Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Set on a future Earth after a cosmic upheaval, the remains of humanity turn to a science advanced enough to be magic. But the turmoil has led a neolithic existence for those who cannot possess the technology. Naturally enough, despots and would-be wizards terrorize the people. But Thundarr, along with Princess Ariel and Ookla the Mok, take the battle back to those who would dominate others. The animated series had plenty of comic book bona fides. Steve Gerber is listed as a co-creator while Jack Kirby aided in the production design and Alex Toth devised the looks of the key characters. Despite these connections, the Dynamite book will be Thundarr’s first foray into the medium.

But as the comic book begins, Thundarr’s greatest foes — Gemini and Mindok the Mind Menace — have teamed up. Thundarr and his friends will have to face their plan for ultimate revenge … and it might just take them back to 1994, when a rogue planet devastated Earth and left the surviving humans scrounging for what was left. Also, along the way, readers will learn how Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla first began their crusade.

“This strange new world arisen from the old, a world of savagery, super-science and sorcery, as created by so many comic book legends, imprinted on me in a profound way at an early age,” Aaron said in a statement. “Thundarr the Barbarian isn’t simply my all-time favorite Saturday morning cartoon. It’s a fundamental component of my DNA as a writer. To say I’m thrilled to be crafting Thundarr’s first ever comic book adventure would be a gross understatement. In a career full of dream jobs, this one will most assuredly go down as one of the dreamiest. And as a lifelong fan of this character and his richly-imagined world, I’m intent on creating a story that honors the cartoon we all know and love, while propelling Thundarr into his most epic adventure yet.”

Supporting the debut issue are covers from Rob Liefeld, Dan Panosian, Francesco Mattina, Michael Cho, Joseph Michael Linsner, Björn Barends, and more.

The company promises more reveals during NYCC later this week. Thundarr the Barbarian #1, meanwhile, arrives in shops this January.
