Ulisses Games Announces A Return To ‘The Warlock Of Firetop Mountain’
by Anton Kromoff
Welcome to the table,
Long, long ago, in an age before I inhabited this earth, The Warlock of Firetop Mountain, a single-player adventure gamebook, was published by Puffin Books. This book, written by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone, with illustrations by Russ Nicholson, became the first gamebook in the Fighting Fantasy series and was later republished by Wizard Books in 2002, and then again by Scholastic Books in 2017.

With that in mind, it was rad to see this come across my desk today. Ulisses Games has announced the upcoming launch of The Warlock of Firetop Mountain in the form of a fast-paced dungeon crawler board game. It touts cooperative play where players explore the mountain together, battling the warlock to claim his treasure.
“The Warlock of Firetop Mountain gamebook introduced millions of people around the world to interactive fantasy adventures,” said Livingstone. “This new board game brings the same thrilling excitement in a new format to a new generation of heroes — and will hopefully inspire players who once braved Firetop Mountain long ago to challenge the Warlock once again. May their stamina never fail!”

Launching on Gamefound in January 2026, the board game is set to feature gameplay designed to capture the tension and tough choices of the original, while offering a shared party experience and more tactical combat. The game will be playable solo or with up to 4 players. It will make use of some original and some new art in the style of the famed gamebooks, mixing the dark humor and suspense of the classic adventures.

“This project is a celebration of the most popular classic adventure combined with modern board gaming,” said Wagner. “While the mechanics are state-of-the-art, the feeling of gameplay will take you right back to the legendary choose-your-own adventure books. We hope long-time Fighting Fantasy fans and new players alike will enjoy exploring Firetop Mountain together and support us when it launches on Gamefound.”
