Review: The Light Prevails In ‘Huck: Big Bad World’ #6

‘Huck: Big Bad World’ #6 is an enjoyable read and represents the kind of optimistic, feel-good comics that many comics lack in today’s marketplace. A fitting, heartwarming ending for Huck and friends.

10/10We learnt last issue that Zoe’s unborn child has super-powers, even if Lucas Trust, who are hunting down all super-powered humans to wipe them out, don’t. But, it’s not just her foetus that gives a helping hand to Huck and Zoe in Huck: Big Bad World #6 by Mark Millar and Rafael Albuquerque. A much bigger surprise is awaiting the Lucas Trust and its witch finders. A surprise guest appearance that gives an origin to this reality’s super-powered beings. A secret origin, if you like.
With some big revelations and a huge time jump at the end of this issue and this series, Millar returns us to the wholesome, optimistic tone that has been a signature of this book, and Huck, throughout. The dark clouds have disappeared, and the future is looking bright once more. The cold blues of the Lucas Trust are removed to be replaced by sepia yellows and sunset orange, and reds, crafted by colourist Dave McCaig.
Huck is a ray of light in a Millarverse that also includes the likes of Nemesis and Wanted’s Wesley Gibson. A hero who is designed to harken back to the Golden Age of comics. When superheroes represented truth, honour and the American Way. All of which Huck embodies in both appearance and actions. This issue, and this series, is something of a departure for Millar, who revels in the dark, gritty and the bombastic. And while there are some pretty bombastic ideas in this issue, the dark and the gritty have been expelled by the end of the comic. This is definitely a comic fuelled by optimism and hope.
A happy-ever-after for Huck and Zoe, and deservedly so.
