RPG players, ho!
Dynamite and Warner Bros. Discovery Global Consumer Products announced Tuesday the upcoming ThunderCats: The Roleplaying Game. And it’s now live on Kickstarter. Designed at Lynnvander Studios by the likes of Tommy Gofton, Devin Wilson, Bryan CP Steele, Josh Derksen, Adam Petkovic, and more, the core rulebook offers 250 pages of mechanics (compatible with Dungeons & Dragons Fifth Edition) and lore. All of which offers gamemasters the chance to build their own adventures for players on Third Earth. Per Dynamite’s description, “Harnessing the power of Thundrillium, players will sustain their technology, pilot starships through cosmic storms, wield enchanted armaments and ancient spells.” Planetside, scenarios will also see “laser rifles and mystic blades alike clash, wizards and robots duel, and vital resources include both raw courage and energy cells.”
Those looking to dive deeper into the lore elements will find expanded descriptions of key items like the Book of Omens, and further explorations of the Great Migration and Mumm-Ra’s origins. Character bios for the main ThunderCats characters are also included with their abilities translated into the game’s mechanics for use as NPCs or for direct use by those on the journey within Third Earth. That location is described in detail, as is New Thundera and other realms. Various ships, vehicles, and equipment are also given the RPG makeover.

Players creating characters can start with subclasses like the Mechanist, Path of Collision, College of Omens, Ancient Spirits of Evil and Good Domain, Circle of the Croft, and the Operator, to name but a few. Species types include Thundarians, of course, in addition to Humans, Snarfs, Berbils, Snowfolk, Tuskas, and even Mu’Tants. Honestly, an all Mu’Tant campaign might be the most thrilling option at first glance as the game offers multiple factions and a perspective unseen on the original animated series: a group of Mu’Tants just trying to survive the conflict between their leaders, Mumm-Ra, and the ‘Cats.
During the Kickstarter campaign, the game will be available in three editions: the base hardcover with David Nakayama‘s gorgeous cover for ThunderCats #1; a limited edition printing with Nakayama’s illustration of Lion-O in front of a bursting franchise logo, and shines with red accents; and a leatherbound presentation featuring the ThunderCats logo emblazoned upon the cover.
