Breaking Bad With The King Of Monsters: Reviewing ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles X Godzilla’ #2

IDW’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles X Godzilla #2 has dropped, and it’s a doozy. Let’s get into it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles X Godzilla #2 kicks off with April reporting on King Ghidora attacking Manhattan. We learn quickly that she is in the Turtle Van with Master Splinter and the boys as they roll through the sewers trying to get closer to the Kaiju. 

Mondo Gecko and Casey Jones are out in the streets helping how they can, and the boys burst from the sewer in the van and snatch them from Ghidora’s lightning breath.

In Western Tokyo, we have Godzilla, Anguirus, and Rodan causing chaos and wanton destruction. Mechagodzilla is deployed, knocking back Anguirus and Rodan with ease, and Godzilla seems fairly indifferent to the whole situation.

We learn that The Shredder is trying to use his fancy mind meld techniques we learned about in the first issue to control Godzilla, and while it does not work because Godzilla is “singular and the King of Monsters,” the Shredder can control Anguirus and Rodan and make them urge Godzilla to destroy stuff.

I really dig this idea that Godzilla, in order to be a good leader, is going to break bad on the world because the other less than monsters want him to do that.

We jump back to New York, and the boys and Splinter climb up ropes to get to the top of a flying King Ghidora, a thing that even in a world of towering monsters and talking teenage turtles makes no sense to me, because of the speed at which Ghidora is flying plus the length of the ropes and the hight of buildings would prove an impossible needle to thread just from a raw physical perspective, but never the less, they do it and it looks cool and is therefore fine.

From the back of King Ghidora, Master Splinter and the Turtles enter a trancelike state where they go into the void realm of the mind. Once in this mental landscape, they see the Technodrome and hear The Shredder in their heads.

They realize that The Shredder is using Krang’s tech and his mental abilities to drive the monsters to fight. Using their own mental powers, they break the hold The Shredder has over King Ghidorah, and the three-headed dragon from space flies off.

It’s a cool way to keep the boys involved in giant monster fights, and honestly, I dig the mental space where they can influence the titans of Earth and beyond.

The issue draws to a close with The Shredder breaking into a G-Force facility to get the blood of Hedorah, Biollante, and Destoroyah. So, we are going to get more monster fights. There is also a mysterious voice contacting April as the Turtle crew flies to Tokyo.

My assumption is that it’s the Shobijin, and we are going to get Mothra next issue. Since I am out here predicting, I think we are going to see Metal Head or Donny connect with Mechagodzilla, the boys somehow connecting with Godzilla, Rodan, and Anguirus, and the forces The Shredder is amassing, clashing in a big old rumble “War of Monsters” style.

Only time will tell!
