Talking ‘Toxie Team-Up’ With Ahoy Comics’ EiC Tom Peyer And Writer Matt Bors

The recent Toxie Team Up miniseries gets collected as a trade paperback this Wednesday, 27th January, from Ahoy Comics. A series that saw Toxie team up with the likes of Dragonflyman, the Justice Warriors and … Jesus Christ! As a fan of the series, and all things Toxie for that matter – not so much Jesus, though – I had to catch up with Ahoy Comics Editor-in-Chief, Tom Peyer and writer and satirist, Matt Bors.   

Olly MacNamee: I’ve read a lot of different crossovers and team-ups in my time, but Toxie and Jesus Christ was never one I would have imagined ever happening. So, how did you and the gang at AHOY Comics come up with this inspiring idea for a series of comics where the Toxic Avenger joins up with so many bizarre characters? 

Tom Peyer: Sarah Litt came up with the idea of doing an old-fashioned team-up series with the wild and often transgressive stars of the AHOY stable. Jesus Christ, Acid Chimp, Justice Warriors … the list practically wrote itself. 

Matt Bors: The moment someone says “Toxic Avenger vs. Jesus Christ” you greenlight the series.

MacNamee: And how much of a hand did you have in curating this series?  

Peyer: Sarah I were the series editors and put the character lineup and creative teams together. Ben Clarkson and Matt were left to focus a superhuman level of concentration on the important and often dangerous work of introducing Toxie to their Justice Warriors. 

Matt Bors: Yes, I just do what Tom tells me, and if he says to take my creator-owned comic and do a crossover with Toxie then, well, I will begrudgingly commit myself to this drudgery. It’s a job! 

MacNamee: I believe it was you who first brought Toxie to the attention of AHOY Comics. And now it’s landed, how much say does Troma and Lloyd Kaufman have on the comic book front?

Bors: Everyone at Troma has been great to work with. When I pitched this idea initially to AHOY and Troma, everyone saw that I had a plan for a large storyline taking place over multiple volumes, the revival of the Crusaders, and more. Which is to say, they have been fully supportive and let me cook. We’re not dealing with a large conglomerate with a board of brand managers–it’s Lloyd and his Tromatic minions and they are there to help me when I need it.

Peyer: Troma and Lloyd have been nothing but supportive.They really seem to admire what our creative teams are doing. They give us a lot of very kind compliments, and Lloyd gets a kick out of writing his “Stan’s Soapbox” tribute—”Lloyd’s Mop Bucket”—on our letter pages. 

MacNamee: I love that in each instalment of this trade paperback collection, there’s little in the way of exposition. Was this intentional on your part to get more out of these meet-ups with the likes of the Jersey Devil, Dragonflyman, Acid Chimp et al? 

Bors: There is very little to explain when it comes to Toxic Avenger going through time-dilation in a space ship and ending up in the future world of Bubble City to encounter its all-mutant police force. These are simple, everyday concepts.

Peyer: Do you mean little reference to previous issues? Or little in the way of introductions to the various characters? Both fit right into our sacred mission of complete-in-one-issue homages to Marvel Team-Up and Brave and the Bold. Comics you could pick up in the middle of the run and not feel like you were missing something from last ish.  

MacNamee: Focusing on your own writing contribution to this new collection, Toxie time-travelling into the future, where he is in his element amongst the other mutants of the Justice Warriors. This is the stuff that dreams are made of, surely? A life-long fan of the Toxic Avenger teaming-up with your very own co-creations must be up there on your bucket list, right? 

Bors: Oh yeah, as I joked above, Tom didn’t have to twist my arm too hard. Me and my co-creator Ben Clarkson were over the moon to do our first official IP-crossover. Who is next? Justice Warriors and Batman teaming up on the mentally ill mutants of Gotham? Justice Warriors and Deadpool breaking the laws of the third wall? There really is no ceiling here other than sales records that can be broken like the limbs of a resisting mutant perp. 

MacNamee: As for AHOY Comics. What can I say? One of the most inventive and cerebral publishers out there today. Could any other company have given you the green light for such a bonkers project?

Peyer: Answer carefully, Matt. 

Bors: Yes, I would say that inventive… and cerebral nature is … entirely due to Tom. A great man and, in my own estimation, a comics scholar. Now I suppose I could imagine another company greenlighting this, but who would want to? 

MacNamee: Finally, what’s next for the Toxic Avenger under your stewardship? What can you tell us, given he’s now an integral part of the AHOY Universe? I mean, how do you top meeting Jesus? 

Bors: Right now we are running our five-part gonzo political satire in the main book called “Toxie Goes to Washington” drawn by Fred Harper and the Toxic Crusaders miniseries will conclude with a big bang in issue 5 … including a reveal that will indicate where we are headed next. We have to preserve some secrecy until we are ready to announce further plans in a discreet PR event. 

Peyer: Toxie should team up with me. That would top Jesus! 

MacNamee: Matt, Tom, thanks for taking the time out, and here’s to a glowing (preferably not because of the toxic waste) future for Toxie in comics!
