‘Crypt Of The Nekrolych’ Rises Over The Gaming Table

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

There is no denying that Daggerheart — the flagship tabletop role-playing game from Critical Role‘s publishing company, Darrington Press — has been making waves. With multiple actual play projects based around Daggerheart in the works and the addition of veteran and well-lauded game designers Chris Perkins and Jeremy Crawford to the Darington Press ranks, it’s set to be the next big gaming system at the table.

Because of that, we are starting to see some really interesting 3rd party offerings using the Daggerheart system. One such offering: Crypt of Nekrolych.

Created by Tomas Gimenez Rioja, Crypt of the Nekrolych is a Daggerheart ‘Villain Frame’ with 29+ Adversaries to plug and play in your campaign, giving you unique and interesting combatants and foes to clash with your players as they explore at your gaming table.

The primary villain in Crypt of the Nekrolych is, as one could guess, the NekroLych. This offering will see the Nekrolych becoming the “Big Bad” of the campaign you port it into, and gives you everything you need to know about its backstory, motives, and plans, providing a compelling, well-rounded foe for your players to loathe.

In addition to the NekroLych, you will also get 3 powerful lieutenants Adversaries for the players to fight within Tiers 1, 2, and 3 of play (the NekroLych is made for Tier 4, of course!), each with goals they are looking to achieve!

There are also going to be magical locations with their own environmental stat blocks, optional rules to add to your campaign, and other fun bits of lore and game mechanics to make your story feel unique.

I dig when you start to see these kinds of projects popping up in the hobby space. Homebrew and innovation of a gaming system are really how they maintain any kind of hold over larger groups of players. You have to be able to show what a game can do and with rad art from one of my favorite creators, Tania Herrero — and the talented Felipe da Silva FariaCrypt of the NekroLych hearkens very much to the zine culture. It’s very much the people who are out there trying new and interesting things in the space to see how far they can bend and twist game mechanics and systems to make it what they want it to be.

You can check out the campaign over at the link.

Until next time, go check this one out. If for no other reason than it feels like it will be telling of how well people are embracing 3rd party materium in the Daggerheart space. It may seem small, but as someone who has watched many systems rise and fall, these kinds of things are small in the moment, but key in the long run.
