Streaming And Screaming: ‘The Dead Lands’

The Dead Lands is a culturally unique take on the age-old drama of revenge. Per the plot summary, “it’s up to a Maori chieftain’s teenage son to avenge his father’s murder and bring peace after his tribe is destroyed through an act of betrayal.” The characters are riveting; the antagonists are charismatic and the protagonist’s mentor is terrifying. The warriors also practice a unique form of martial arts employing elements of war dancing. The film is proof that we need more indigenous action films. If this is your first exposure to Maori warrior mythology, this is a great place to start.
