Streaming And Screaming: ‘Dust Bunny’

Bryan Fuller has garnered a passionate fanbase with his cult-favorite TV shows Hannibal and Pushing Daisies. His feature directorial debut, Dust Bunny, appears to fuse those two universes together with Mads Mikkelsen playing a hitman hired by a 10-year-old girl to kill the “monster” she believes ate her entire family. The film’s premise is like a blend of Leon: The Professional and Alice in Wonderland.
It offers a stylish and surreal alternative to the gritty hitman genre popularized by John Wick. The film expertly juggles multiple tones and I was hypnotized by the dreamlike atmosphere. The blend between action film and fairy tale reminded me of the equally imaginative Boy Kills World. Some viewers may desire a little more blood from the action scenes. Nevertheless, I think the movie could serve as a gateway cult film for younger viewers. Kids who enjoy spooky stories like Stranger Things, M3GAN, and Wednesday will probably love it.
