‘Star City’ Trailer Reveals AppleTV’s Soviet ‘For All Mankind’

by Erik Amaya

While For All Mankind is nearing its end (after two more season), the program’s alternate universe telling of the space race — and humanity establishing itself on other worlds — still has many stories to tell. And Apple has already explored one avenue with Star City, a deeper look at how and why the Soviet Union made it to the moon first in FAK‘s version of history.

In some ways, For All Mankind is a sleeper hit, returning every so often to diverge from our history and tell compelling stories for its audience. And when someone locks into the the show, they lock in, so it makes sense Apple would want to extend the world in this way. And going back to the inciting incident from the Soviet point of view is a brilliant choice. Per Apple, Star City will explore “the lives of the cosmonauts, the engineers, and the intelligence officers embedded among them in the Soviet space program, and the risks they all took to propel humankind forward.” The trailer, though, adds a paranoid spy thriller vibe as the Americans always seem to be on the brink of learning the Soviet space program’s plans.

Starring Rhys Ifans, Anna Maxwell Martin, Agnes O’Casey, Alice Englert, Solly McLeod, Adam Nagaitis, Ruby Ashbourne Serkis, Josef Davies, and Priya Kansara, the eight-episode series debuts May 29th on AppleTV.
