Arrow Video’s July Releases Include 4K ‘Falling Down,’ ‘To Live and Die in L.A.,’ Reiko Ike, And More

This July, we understand if you skip the fireworks to stay home and watch movies as Arrow Video has an absolutely stacked month in store for fans. The boutique label is unleashing 4K and Blu-ray takes on LA crime thrillers, Japanese sleaze, indie horror, and a sci-fi classic guaranteed to make you think twice before digging in at the family Fourth of July BBQ.

First up is the 1993 thriller Falling Down on limited edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray. Joel Schumacher directed this controversial film in which an ordinary Los Angeles resident (Michael Douglas) is pushed too far by modern urban stressors and begins taking the law into his own hands, like a nerdy Batman. Robert Duvall plays the sympathetic cop on his tail. Newly restored in 4K, it features a commentary by Schumacher, Douglas and others, new interviews, a collectors’ booklet, and more. Available in the US and UK.

Speaking of SoCal crime movies, next up is To Live and Die in L.A. on 4K UHD. William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) directed this endlessly stylish thriller starring William L. Petersen and Willem Dafoe, with a propulsive synth score by Wang Chung. Newly restored from the original camera negative, the UK-only 4K disc boasts extras including an audio commentary by Friedkin, a reversible sleeve, new artwork, a collectors’ booklet, and more.

What would an Arrow announcement be without some cult horror? Before he became Stephen King‘s most famous fan, writer-director Mike Flanagan (Gerald’s Game, The Life of Chuck, Doctor Sleep) unleashed 2016’s Hush, debuting on limited edition 4K UHD in the UK. The claustrophobic slasher stars Kate Siegel and John Gallagher Jr. The two disc release includes a black & white version of the film with an alternative audio mix, a feature length Q&A with Flanagan, a new visual essay, interviews, and more.

Duvall returns for the next entry, 1973’s The Outfit, on limited edition Blu-ray. Rolling Thunder director John Flynn adapted the novel by Richard Stark (the pen name of Donald E. Westlake), whose work was previously turned into 1967’s Point Blank with Lee Marvin. The result is a crackling, neo-noirish yarn that acts as a sort-of-sequel to Point Blank, with Duvall stepping into Marvin’s shoes, albeit with a different character name. Karen Black, Joe Don Baker, Robert Ryan, and Richard Jaeckel co-star. Available in the US and UK, the release features a new commentary, new appreciations of the film and Westlake, a featurette, a collectors’ booklet, reversible sleeve, and more.

Also in July, get a double dose of ’70s Japanese exploitation with Sex and Fury/Female Yakuza Tale on limited edition Blu-ray in the US and UK. The lurid, high-energy duo both star cult heroine Reiko Ike and have to be seen to be believed. Extra features are TBA.
We end our preview with one of the most famous twist endings of all time, found in Soylent Green, being released on limited edition 4K UHD and Blu-ray. The sci-fi classic stars Charlton Heston as a man who uncovers a stomach-churning conspiracy in dystopian NYC. Directed by Richard Fleischer (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea), it also stars Hollywood legends Joseph Cotten and Edward G. Robinson. Sporting a new 4K restoration from the original 35mm, the US and UK release includes two audio commentaries, interviews, vintage featurettes, new artwork, a collectors’ booklet, and more.
