Fight The Mondays With A ‘Secret Lair x Garfield Cats Are the Best’ Superdrop

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

Mondays … am I right?

The team over at Wizards of the Coast has announced three Secret Lair x Garfield drops as part of their Cats Are the Best Superdrop. These special limited Magic: The Gathering collections showcase the many sides of Garfield, whether he’s motivating you to defeat your opponents, hunting for his prey atop a saber-toothed tiger, or helping you play Magic: The Gathering exactly as it was intended.

I who grew up reading Jim Davis‘s Garfield in both the newspaper and those collected graphic novels. Seeing the big orange cat and his family and friends on MTG cards was never something I expected, but it is not something that is displeasing to me in the slightest. I’m mostly a mono-black player, so a Dark Ritual with a coffee-carrying Garfield totally works for me.
“When Secret Lair realized that cats would get a full Superdrop sales event, we were thrilled to have the opportunity to include Garfield,” said Secret Lair Senior Director Lindsey Bartell. “Jim Davis’ Garfield comic strips inspired a whole generation of artists and creatives in a way that is truly timeless. We were so thrilled and proud to be able to work with PAWS INC. to bring this to life in a way that feels truly authentic to both Magic and Garfield.”

There is something for everyone here, including the kids who grew up seeing Garfield on the classroom bulletin board. Secret Lair x Garfield: Motivationally Challenged pulls from some of the character’s most memorable motivational posters and pairs them with perfectly fitting Magic cards. Ever wanted to express how much you hate Mondays? Beast Within would love to help with that! With five cards, there are plenty of ways to express how you feel at the Magic: The Gathering table.

Secret Lair x Garfield: Motivationally Challenged is set to include 1 Rin and Seri, Inseparable as Garfield and Odie, Best Buds, 1 Orim’s Chant as Talk to the Paw, 1 Ponder as Hang in There, 1 Beast Within as I Hate Mondays, and 1 Sol Ring.

Secret Lair x Garfield: Our Only Thought Is to Entertain You brings the entertainer beneath the naps, lasagna, and everyday contempt to the forefront. In this case, “entertainer” could include terrible judgment, an unchecked appetite, and the kind of comic logic that turns one bad impulse into a full-blown hallucination. Molten Collapse is actually marinara sauce instead of molten-hot magma, or so I’m told.

Secret Lair x Garfield: Our Only Thought Is to Entertain You is said to have 1 It That Betrays, 1 Maddening Cacophony, 1 Maddening Hex, 1 Hunter’s Insight, and 1 Molten Collapse.

Secret Lair x Garfield: As Intended takes cards from the first Magic: The Gathering set and asks a simple question: what if Garfield himself art-directed Magic in its early days? It nods to the game’s original playtest cards, which used art clipped from newspapers and magazines. Casting a Counterspell never felt so satisfying.

Secret Lair x Garfield: As Intended is set to include 1 Swords to Plowshares, 1 Counterspell, 1 Dark Ritual, 1 Earthquake, and 1 Fog.

All Secret Lair x Garfield drops will be available in Foil for $39.99, and Non-Foil for $29.99 while supplies last. These special, limited quantity Secret Lair x Garfield collections will go on sale as part of the Cats are the Best Superdrop starting at 9 a.m. PT on June 15th. You can also receive a Foil Food Token promo card with special Garfield lasagna art for every $199 USD spent on a single transaction, while supplies last. Right now, you can sign up for alerts on the Secret Lair website to get the latest reveals for the Cats are the Best Superdrop.

Until next time, this set is going to make some fans happy, and I hope that those who don’t get it at least understand that there is a place for every fandom as long as it does not hurt other people, and these Secret Lair drops are a really good way to make small batch sets to put smiles on faces.
