Mark Russell And Lorenzo Re Take Helm As Dynamite Reveals Its New ‘Firefly’ Comic Book

Dynamite aims to misbehave.
The company revealed Thursday it has obtained the licenese to produce a new run of Firefly comics starting this Fall. Mark Russell and Lorenzo Re pilot the Serenity into its next adventure. As it begins, Mal Reynolds is “desperate for cash” to keep the ship flying. Meanwhile, “Simon and Kaylee must pose as a married couple to pull off a heist, but end up with more than they bargained for when an old caper comes back to haunt them.” Oh, what could that caper be? And is Badger far from the action?
In fact, what are Inara, Zoë, and Jayne up to as the Serenity‘s future comes into doubt? And how much of the previous comic book continuity will matter once Mal gets the ship back into space? Those tales from Boom! Studios and Dark Horse sometimes told new tales set after the Serenity feature film, but often filled in the gaps of the original TV series. The new comic could do the same, but it remains to be seen how much lore will transfer over. One clue: Dynamite refers to Russell as a diehard fan of the show. Also, we can’t help but notice the presence of Wash in the cover image above (and the whole TV cast in one of the others), which suggests this story takes place before certain events.
Of course, uncertainty is a key element of Firefly — both for the characters and its fans, who willed the film into existence by sheer persistence.
Supporting the debut issue are covers from Robert Quinn, Meghan Hetrick, Declan Shalvey, Paris Alleyne, Stephen Byrne, and an “Icon Cover” from Daniel Warren Johnson. Also, mystery blind bags with exclusive variants will be available.
Firefly #1 lands in shops on September 2nd.
