Quick Review: CAZA’S ‘Kris Kool’

After being introduced to CAZA with Arkadi And The Lost Titan, this reviewer was pleased to discover Kris Kool at MoCCA Arts Fest. Every so often, one encounters a comic that looks and feels tailor-made to specific tastes and this is definitely one of those books. The story follows a space adventurer who must traverse dreamlike planets full of sensual perils. It’s pure ’60s psychedelia in the same vein as Yellow Submarine and Belladonna of Sadness.
This particular blend of pop art, erotica, and surrealism has everything I enjoy in comics, but find sorely lacking from the traditional American publishers. Kris Kool may have debuted over 50 years ago, but the narrative is still avant garde. Every time I believe I’ve reach the apex of the comics medium, a book comes along that makes me reassess what the art form can do.
