SDCC 2026: ‘Nintendo Switch Sports Resort’ Enjoyable Gameplay With Classics And Charming New Additions

Nintendo’s Sports line moved casuals off of the couch and into gaming thanks to the unique active play mechanics. The ability for the Wii to sense motion controls made for novel approaches to boxing, tennis and more. On 22nd October 2o26, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort will arrive carrying the mantle of the past. Although the title won’t release until the fall, we received a hands-on preview at San Diego Comic-Con 2026.
In total, Nintendo Switch Sports Resort will have 12 sports available. We previewed a third of them. Fan favorite bowling returns with familiar controls. It is a little tricky since you have to release the button at the correct time to even throw the ball. The controls are highly sensitive and can detect even a little wrist movement to add some spin. Games can become lengthy because they go the full ten frames, and there is competitive play with users alternating turns. Also returning is 100 pin bowling, an unusual twist to the standard match. It provides an opportunity to rack up a high score, but some of those splits are near impossible to convert.
Speaking of quirky gameplay, one of the sports included is thumb wrestling. It involves dexterity and timing in order to avoid attacks and pin attempts. Moving the controller back and forth quickly can help break out if caught. It’s definitely an odd choice, but a wholesome pick that adds to the charm and character.
Something more straightforward is jet skiing. It involves holding the Joy-Con pair like handlebars for steering. A quick flick on one side will pull the throttle, causing a boost in speed. Other than that, it feels like any racing game.
The standout of the available selection is archery. It captures the real natural motions well. Hold one Joy-Con to aim and draw back on the other Joy Con to place the arrow and prepare for launch. The further you pull back, the stronger the release will be. A nice touch is factoring environmental factors such as wind and distance while trying to achieve a bullseye.
Nintendo Switch Sports Resort is looking to be an entertaining game for both solo and multiplayer play. It takes full advantage of the Joy-Con to simulate the sensory feel of playing each sport. In addition, it brings back some classics while including new, fresh, and quirky options.
