Wizards Of The Coast Launches Five Secret Lair X ‘The Hobbit’ Drops As Part Of A ‘Marvelous Mathoms Superdrop’

Before bed, for the last month or so, I have been watching The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit movies and shows. No phone, no laptop, nothing else to distract me while watching them. I’ve just been hanging out and enjoying the world of Middle-earth. It’s been a really comforting and enjoyable time, and seeing some of the extended scenes for the first time has really been a treat.

I was so stoked that I went to a local gaming shop I recently discovered on the day the Magic: The Gathering The Hobbit set was dropping and got to watch a bunch of people pick up their pre-orders and really get a ton of enjoyment ripping packs and building new decks. While there were no packs for retail purchase at the time, it was still cool to be back in that environment watching people get to enjoy the cards and conversation.

I love Magic: The Gathering. To me, a person who has always used mobility aids, it’s the closest thing to a “sport” (outside my brief time in sled hockey) I have ever experienced, and it’s been a big part of my life for over 30 years. So when the various IPs that I love come together with MTG, it brings a smile to my face, and even if I don’t have an opportunity to buy them, I still get a thrill enjoying other people getting to have those experiences.

So you can imagine when I found out my pals at MTG and Secret Lair were doing a Hobbit drop, I grinned like I was Gollum holding the One Ring.

Wizards of the Coast will soon launched five Secret Lair x The Hobbit drops as part of A Marvelous Mathoms Superdrop. These limited Magic: The Gathering collections follow Bilbo Baggins from Bag End to the Lonely Mountain, with stops for riddles in the dark, meals worth remembering, wild roads, Dragon hoards, and the kind of trouble that tends to begin when someone says it’s time for an adventure.

Secret Lair x The Hobbit: He Who Walks Unseen follows Bilbo Baggins through moments where a Hobbit can vanish from view and still find himself exactly where the trouble is.

Available exclusively in the Out of Sight edition, this drop uses a brand-new foil treatment created to emphasize Bilbo’s outline in each scene, whether anyone can see him or not. It also includes 1 Arcane Heist, 1 Contentious Plan, 1 Curiosity, 1 Solve the Equation, and 1 Windfall.

 

Secret Lair x The Hobbit: Second Breakfast and Beyond celebrates one of the great Hobbit traditions: knowing when it is time to eat.

Featuring seven food tokens inspired by the seven meals Hobbits enjoy throughout the day, this drop brings breakfast, Second Breakfast, Elevenses, and the rest of the day’s essentials to Magic.

Secret Lair x The Hobbit: Over the Edge of the Wild follows Bilbo beyond the comforts of The Shire and into the stranger turns of the road ahead.

Inspired by mid-century stop-motion television specials, this drop imagines key moments from The Hobbit with a playful, handmade sensibility suited for trolls, spiders, forests, and other reasons to reconsider leaving home. It contains contains 1 Cloudshift, 1 Tocasia’s Welcome as “Quite a Merry Gathering”, 1 Stony Silence, 1 Imp’s Mischief, and 1 Seize the Spoils.

 

Secret Lair x The Hobbit: Smaug’s Spoils asks what might happen if a few Magic artifacts found their way into Smaug’s hoard.

This drop gathers familiar artifacts among the dragon’s treasure, where gold, gems, and a well-placed Sol Ring all seem like exactly the sort of thing Smaug would prefer no one touch.

The full drop includes 1 Fellwar Stone as “Erebor Heirloom”, 1 Lightning Greaves, 1 Liquimetal Torque, 1 Sol Ring, and 1 Thought Vessel. That Sol Ring is an iconic card, and it is so rad to see it in this collection.

My favorite of these drops is Secret Lair x The Hobbit: Desolation. This set depicts classic moments from The Hobbit through a darker, metal-inspired lens.

Stark, intense, and built around fire, ruin, and confrontation, this drop explores the story’s most brutal edges with art that feels as heavy as the road to the Lonely Mountain.

It comes with 1 Defile, 1 Diabolic Intent, 1 Dread Return, 1 Mirkwood Bats, and 1 Read the Bones.

Secret Lair x The Hobbit: He Who Walks Unseen will be available exclusively in Out of Sight edition for $59.99, while all other Secret Lair x The Hobbit drops will be available in Foil ($39.99) and Non-Foil ($29.99) while supplies last.

These drops will go on sale now. For every $199 spent, orders will also come with a promo Arcane Signet as “Heart of the Mountain”, featuring the gemstone found deep beneath the Lonely Mountain, while supplies last.
