Marvel Comics Reveals Peach Momoko’s Momo-Tone Variant Covers

In the last five or so years, Peach Momoko has become one of the most notable cover artists in comics, and a mainstay of Marvel’s variant cover programs. In November, she gets her own Marvel Comics variant branding with Momo-Tone.
Momo-Tone is an all-new variant collection that displays a striking new technique for the best-selling cover artist. In a series of new gorgeously painted art, Momoko has utilized screentones — adhesive sheets traditionally used in manga to create dynamic shades of gray and dramatic shadows. The resulting art is a bold collection of dramatic portraits of Marvel heroes unlike anything Momoko has created before, while still recognizable in her signature style.
When asked about the project, Momoko shared, “When I was in school, I always wanted to use screentones for my artwork, but they were too expensive for me to afford. Now I have the opportunity and decided to challenge myself by using screentones for these new Marvel covers.”
“But an obstacle emerged,” Momoko explained. “How to color using watercolor paint on these screentones? So instead of painting on top of the screentones (risking the art warping), I tried and found that painting on the back of the canvas was very effective! It created a very clean, soft tone color palette that comes through the painting when light passes through from behind. I always enjoy these trial and error challenges and discovering the best methods of painting. “
