Dynamite’s ‘Ben 10’ Series Passes Over 500,000 Copies Sold

by Erik Amaya

People like Ben 10.

That’s pretty established at this point, thanks to the popularity of Dynamite’s comic book series based on the animated series. But to provide a further bona fide, the company announced Tuesday that sales of the first five issues have surpassed 500,000 copies — a milestone for any title not rooted in a major superhero from the Big Two publishers.

Spearheaded by the original Man of Action team — Joe Casey, Joe Kelly, Duncan Rouleau, and Steven T. Seagle — the series charts a new take on the characters updated for the 2020s. As it begins, Ben and his family are “out camping, when a meteor crashes nearby.” He soon discovers the Omnitrix at the impact site. It gives him familiar powers, but this new version of the origin will include an expanded scale and scope of pivotal moments, including “a range of ‘real world’” implications with “the military getting peripherally involved and a bona fide alien threat.”

Since then, familiar allies and enemies have emerged with new spins via the writers and artist Robert Carey. Casey wrote the first four issues with Seagle coming aboard to write issue #5. In October, the story takes a pause for the Ben 10 Creators File special. Casey returns to writing with issue #6 due out in November. As it happens, FOC for the issue is this week, so talk to your comic shop about reserving the issue.

The same day Ben 10 #6 hits stores, the collected volume of the first five installments will also be available for those looking to have the story in handy format or to demonstrate to friends why Ben 10 matters. All options are available as the series continues its course.
