Adult Animation Revolution: ‘Electro Andes’ Episode 1
by Tito W. James
If you’re a fan of indie animation, we’re experiencing an embarrassment of riches. Electro Andes continues the hot-streak on indie animated action shows. Directed by Nacho Malter and Damian Fernandez Gomez, the series is about two brothers, Cal and Pietro, who join an eco-terrorist cell and inadvertently awaken an ancient legend beneath the Andes.
The animation and art direction are impressive. The gravity-defying shoes combine the best elements of cyberpunk and streetwear. The dystopian sci-fi world the characters inhabit looks culturally refreshing in terms of its setting. The presence of corporate-backed fascist goons is a genre staple and uncomfortably close to home.
While the pilot episode is an entertaining watch overall, there are similar indie animated shows that are anime-inspired with a dark supernatural theme. Hopefully, future episodes will dive deeper into the characters and the South American cultural roots that make this series unique.
