Workshop Wednesday: Play Giant Little Games With ‘Gargants’ Little Miniatures

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

Workshop Wednesday is my little slice of the day where I can dive into all sorts of things related to Games Workshop. Today we are talking about giants, White Dwarf Magazine, and skirmish games.

Let’s get into it.

The start of this journey was actually a recent issue of the gaming magazine White Dwarf. In issue 524, there are some rules for a mini-game called Arcane Duel that is really easy to set up and play and only makes use of two miniatures.

White Dwarf is a great gaming periodical. As someone who really loves print media around the hobby, having a subscription provides a ton of value in my life. The Arcane Duel article had me thinking it would be really cool to have some more skirmish mode-type games that feature a 1v1 kind of setup, so it was pretty fortuitous when my pals at Games Workshop sent me over some new miniatures with which I could do just that.

Destruction Battletome: Sons of Behemat

The Destruction Battletome: Sons of Behemat is a dive into the rules and lore of the Gargants, an ancient and monstrous species of giant that lives by a code of brutality and might over all other virtues.

This battle tome comes packed with descriptions of each of the units, faction rules, a Spearhead guide for gameplay, a ton of art, and rules for making your own heroes with the Narrative Path to Glory rules.

There is a ton of art and a solid deep dive into everything you need to know about the Sons of Behemat. You must first wrap your head around the faction. The reason you may want that kind of information is that coming to the table is an awesome skirmish game with terrain and Gargants brawling to see who is the best.

Brawlers of Behemat

The Brawlers of Behemat is a new standalone game that includes two gigantic miniatures and a load of cool new terrain, guides, and tokens so you can smash your opponents into wet red goo so they can’t smash you back.

This game allows you some play variability as well, as the minis provided let you build from three different options, giving you access to the Gate Breaker, the Kraken-Eater, and the Warstomper. Each of these options has its own unique fight style in the brawl.

Another cool aspect of the Brawlers of Behemat set is that you get some really nice ruins and barricade terrain to add to The Table for some more dynamic play.

Stomper Tribe

It has been theorized by those who study the Behemati that Stomper Tribes are the degraded memory of the armies mustered by ancient gargants. A Warstomper Mega-Gargant will give their ‘troops’ clear instructions for the battle, and woe betide any who lose focus.

For players looking to kick off their Sons of Behemat collection, the Stomper Tribe is a pretty rad place to start. With the Stomper Tribe, you can build one Warstomper Meg-Gargant and two Mancrusher Gargants.

The sculpt on these minis has so much detail. There are also a slew of optional decorative components to provide some solid customization for your units.

This is the kind of force you can build and really unleash at the table, as it not only has solid combat prowess, but the Mancrusher Gargants are very adept at holding key points on the battlefield. As a note, when you pick up this box, it’s ideal for representing the Stomper Tribe Army of Renown, the rules for which are found in the Destruction Battletome: Sons of Behemat.

Mancrusher Gargant

There is also a multipart plastic kit that lets you build a single Mancrusher Gargant for your Sons of Behemat armies. The set also has a slew of additional decorations included and multiple weapons, heads, hands, and feet.

Boss-Stompers

Boss-stompers are hardcore brutes who bring a litany of damage to the table, seeking to crash and bash the opposing forces with reckless abandon.

The box comes with components to build three champions, along with a slew of interchangeable components for club heads and the like

Ma Maegran

My favorite of these forces so far is Ma Maegran. She’s this old witch-like giant who hangs out with two giant goat-like horned beasts known as Ghyrochs.

While not spelled out explicitly, the adornments of Ma Maegran seem to harken back to the ancient space gods who seeded life in the universe, but also really lean into her ability to conjure and cast obscure spells and cantrips.

The Ancient Ghyrochs are infused with the life-magics of the land, so they make sense as companions for Ma Maegran, who views them as trusted battle partners she can ask to unleash on other Warhammer Age of Sigmar forces.

King Brodd

Last, but for sure not least, is the infamous King Brodd. King Brodd is the leader who commands and instigates them to brutal glory over the other forces of Sigmar. Brodd makes for a perfect leader in Gargant society. His authority is respected by Gargants across the land, making him one of the few capable of getting the huge louts to act with something approaching coordination.

Warhammer is looking to save you some coin, so the kit itself can build not only King Brodd, but also allow for you to build four other units. These extras include the Beast-smasher Mega-Gargant, a crazed monster-hunter, the Kraken-eater Mega-Gargant, a greedy coast-raider, the Warstomper Mega-Gargant, a veteran battle-brute, and also the Gatebreaker Mega-Gargant, a grim garrison-smasher.

Until next time, if you have been intimidated into jumping into Warhammer, give these units a try; you are using fewer pieces, have less to juggle, and can spend time figuring out what your units do in a one-on-one situation.
