Dynamite Announces 80-Page Giant Program For ‘Red Sonja’ And ‘Vampirella’

by Erik Amaya

The 80-page giant returns!

The format, popular in the 1970s and ’80s, collected several comic book stories into one affordable volume. Around here, we fondly recall an 80-page giant Legion of Superheroes that reprinted the entire “Death of Lightning Lad” saga, offering us an easy way to experience a key moment in LOSH history. But it was far from the only 80-page Giant available at the time.

Flash-forward to now and Dynamite is bringing the format back via two of its most popular characters: Red Sonja and Vampirella.

The Red Sonja 80-Page Giant includes “Dragons” from 2009’s Red Sonja Annual #2 by writer Christos Gage  and artist Pablo Marcos; the short story “Seeing Red” from Red Sonja: Black, White and Red #1 (2021) from Kurt Busiek and Benjamin Dewey; and two full-length epics from Sonja’s original Dynamite series. The first: Ron Marz and Lee Moder‘s tale from Red Sonja #30 (first published in 2008). The second is Eric Trautmann and Patrick Berkenkotter‘s story from Red Sonja #60 (a 2011 release).

Over in the Vampirella 80-Page Giant, fans and newcomers to Vampi’s exploits can find “Death’s Dark Angel” — an important early tale from Archie Goodwin and José González, originally published in 1971’s Vampirella #12. Also included in the tome: “The New European” by Alan Moore and Gary Frank from 1997, marking the 100th anniversary of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Rounding out the giant issue is “the opening acts of two revered runs on the character with the first issue from the 2014 series by Nancy Collins and Patrick Berkenkotter, and then the 2019 kickoff of Christopher Priest‘s still ongoing tenure alongside artist Ergün Gündüz.”

Both giants feature new covers from Roberto Castro, with variant covers further recreating the 80-page Giant vibe. Check them out — and some art from the various stories — in the gallery bellow:
