On Black Lightning, Jefferson Pierce (Cress Williams) spent nine years in retirement to raise his children. One (Nafessa Williams) is a med student who teaches part time at his school and the other (China Anne McClain) is navigating the difficult late teenage years. But after being pushed into corner by the 100 gang, he has returned as Black Lightning. Or, at the very least, he’s started his comeback in a dramatic fashion. The assault on the Seahorse Motel in a new high tech costume definitely sent a message to the community and to Tobias Whale (Marvin “Krondon” Jones III). But as this preview of next week’s episode indicates, getting back into the superhero game is more than just putting on a suit.
And based on the first episode, it looks like Black Lightning will be the CW superhero show to watch. It feels, looks, and behaves in a very different manner that is, honestly, refreshing after the mess that was The Flash‘s mid-season return. Also, Williams is a great lead. I can’t wait to see what this show develops into over the course of the next few weeks.
