SDCC 2018 Exclusives: Mondo Music’s Big Trouble In Little China 2xLP And More
by Olly MacNamee
Working out of Booth #435 over the coming SDCC week and weekend, Mondo Music will be releasing a limited edition run of John Carpenter’s score for his cult film, Big Trouble In Little China. It’s not been available for over 30 years so I imagine there’ll be a big demand for this item in San Diego this weekend. Anyone want to grab me a copy? No, thought not.
Still, here’s what you might want to know about the new coloured vinyl release:
The score to Big Trouble In Little China, composed by John Carpenter in association with Alan Howarth, is an outlier in Carpenter’s filmography – a heavy pulsing synth-score that is simultaneously upbeat and haunting. A true genre mashup; both the film and the score are difficult to pin down, which makes their singularity all the more apparent.
And here’s what it looks like too.
Nice isn’t it?
They’ll also have an exclusive pressing of a new vinyl release of Mary and The Witch’s Flower original score by Takatsugu Muramatsu, with art provided by Mondo regular, Tom Whalen. You can buy the 2 disc LP from Mondo this week anyway, when it’s released this Wednesday, the 18th of July, or bag the SDCC exclusive featuring glow-in-the-dark blue vinyl.
For those unfamiliar, Mary and The Witch’s Flower is the premiere film from all new animation company Studio Ponoc. Directed by Studio Ghibli alum Hiromasa Yonebayashi , the film is absolutely gorgeous and painstakingly detailed with inventive imagery. The score for Mary and The Witch’s Flower is as artfully composed and precise as the film itself – triumphant, lush and always bright.
Both double LPs are limited to 500 copies each, so whether you’re buying online or at SDCC, good luck!
Still here? Want more? Well, there is one more release worth letting you know about. It’s an Adventure Time 7″ single in partnership with Cartoon Network and ahead of the final season of this great show. This you can buy online and it too is available this week on Jake-yellow vinyl. That’s a pretty impressive slate of new releases that I won’t be informing my wallet about.
