SDCC 2018: Wakanda’s Technical Genius Shuri Stars In Her Own Series
by James Ferguson
After stealing every scene she appeared in during the Black Panther film, it’s no wonder that Shuri is getting her own comic series. As revealed on Bustle, the Wakanda Princess / technical genius will star in a new series beginning this October from Marvel Comics. Nnedi Okorafor is writing the comic with Leonardo Romero handling artwork. The first issue will feature a cover from Sam Spratt.
Shuri #1 picks up with Wakanda facing a tragic crisis. Black Panther is lost in space and everyone is looking for a leader who will rule in his absence. Shuri is next in line, but she’s more comfortable in a lab than on a throne. She must choose between her duties to her country and her own ideals.
Writer Nnedi Okorafor told Bustle in an interview:
Shuri is an African young woman of genius level intelligence who is obsessed with technology and has traveled spiritually so far into the past that she’s seen Wakanda before it was Wakanda. The Ancestors call her Ancient Future. And she’s super ambitious. What do I love about her? Alllll that and more. She’s a character in the Marvel Universe who really sings to me.
Shuri #1 will hit stores in October 2018.
