An Epic Quest Begins In Wonder Woman #65

Wonder Woman has been a lot of things in its history. At the series’ strongest, the title character is an icon of hope and a warrior who preaches peace. It’s clearly something that this run has strived for so far, but this issue adds a wrinkle to that.

G. Willow Wilson, Jesus Merino, Andy Owens, Romulo Fajardo, and Pat Brousseau continue this epic tale here. It also kicks off the rest of the run in its closing pages.

Diana tracks down and faces Nemesis. She learns the reptilian goddess is manipulating events around her, which leads her to a bold decision. She promises Veronica Cale that she’ll find her daughter, and with Aphrodite launches into the sky on a quest to find the lost Olympians.

I’m enjoying what Wilson is doing here, but I’m also struggling with one aspect of the book. We’re getting tonal whiplash from issue to issue, with one overarching theme established, then another pushing it aside shortly after. I do think that may resolve itself given the final page of this issue, but it’s been a bit much to swallow. However, it’s extremely well-written and enjoyable, but I’m hanging on.

The art, however, is fantastic. I’ve mentioned before that Merino and Owens are very “DC house style”, but in this issue they switch things up. It felt more like a classic issue by George Perez, with gorgeous detail, engaging layouts and sweeping camera shots. It’s the best looking issue Merino and Owens have done in a very long time, and Fajardo adds his always great color work to push it even higher into the stratosphere.

I’m excited to see where Diana goes from here, and I hope the minor problems get better. I have faith in Wilson and team though.
