Michael Rooker Reportedly Set To Voice King Shark In The Suicide Squad
by Erik Amaya
James Gunn is getting the band back together at Marvel’s crosstown rival.
According to The Wrap, frequent Gunn collaborator Michael Rooker is in talks to voice King Shark in the director’s upcoming The Suicide Squad. Should the reports prove to be accurate, it will be continue their long-standing working relationship. The two famously collaborated on the Guardians of the Galaxy films, in which Rooker made Yondu Udonta an important character to millions. In fact, it is safe to say Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 was really about Rooker being as awesome as 1980s icon Kurt Russell.
Created by Karl Kesel in 1994’s Superboy #0, King Shark debuted as Nanaue, a humanoid shark descended from the Shark God. Superboy managed to subdue him, but both would soon end up as part of a Suicide Squad team which included Deadshot, Captain Boomerang and Special Agent Sam Maoka. He would continue to pop up on various bad guy super squads over the ensuing decades. On the current Flash television show, his godly and Hawaiian origins were replaced with those of a marine biologist exposed to dark matter. While his Earth-1 counterpart died of an accelerated cancer, the Earth-2 biologist mutated into King Shark. He was transported to Earth-1 by Zoom and has made yearly appearances on the show ever since.
It is currently unclear which version of King Shark will be featured in the film, but considering Rooker’s involvement, it is entirely possible Gun will cook up an entirely new origin for the character.
Besides Rooker, the returning Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), the film will also feature Idris Elba in an undisclosed role, David Dastmalchian as the Polka-Dot Man, Daniela Melchior as Ratcatcher, and reportedly the DC Comics characters Peacemaker. All will be press-ganged into a mission of vital national security interest by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis, who also returns).
The Suicide Squad comes to theaters on August 6th, 2021.
