Stumptown Reclaims Its Name In ABC First Look Trailer

by Erik Amaya

Despite word last week that Stumptown would be renamed, ABC released a trailer for the series during its annual Upfront presentation which confirmed the show will be called Stumptown after all. It also seems the series will import the look of the comic book series’ cover and trade dress for its own marketing purposes.

Based on the comic book by Greg Rucka, Matthew Southworth and Justin Greenwood, Smulders plays Dex Parios (Smulders), an Portland-area army veteran with a gambling problem who has turned to private investigations to make ends meet. She’s quite clever, which means she’s just a likely to land up in a heap of trouble as solve her next case. Jason Richman adapted the comic book for executive producer Ruben Fleischer and ABC Studios. Besides Smulders, the series will feature Tantoo Cardinal, Cole Sibus, Adrian Martinez, Camryn Manheim and Michael Ealy.
From the trailer it looks like … well, like a crime show. But considering Stumptown is itself a love letter to older television series like The Rockford Files, the familiarity is entirely intentional. Hopefully, Smulders’ appeal will keep people watching while it figures out its long game. Not that a series like this needs a long game, but that seems to come part-and-parcel with comic book shows.
Stumptown airs Wednesdays this Fall on ABC.
