Shang-Chi Kicks Into A New Mini-Series This June

Marvel announced through The New York Times that the master of martial arts, Shang-Chi will get a new limited series beginning this June. Written by Gene Luen Yang and illustrated by Dike Ruan and Phillip Tan, the comic follows Shang-Chi’s fight for justice as it collides with his past. He’s pulled back into the fold and no one will be ready for what is unleashed. There’s a target on his back after his father’s secret society returns as the balance of power shifts. The series also features an all-new costume designed by Jim Cheung.

Yang told The New York Times:

I mean, it’s Shang-Chi. He’s probably the most prominent Asian — I guess he’s Asian-American now since he’s moved over here — Asian-American super hero.

Shang-Chi’s been around for almost 50 years although his early adventures were a bit stereotypical. He’s gone through a revitalization of sorts over the past few years, becoming a breakout hero in the Marvel Universe and popping up in a number of events and series. He even taught Spider-Man how to fight without his spider sense. It helps that there’s a movie on the way too.
Yang added:

The basic idea that his father is a supervillain is still there. Zheng Zhu has been around a very long time. He has other kids besides Shang-Chi, so we’re going to explore some of those sibling relationships.

Shang-Chi #1 is set for release in June 2020.
