Amazon’s successful adaptation of The Boys returns September 4th.
The series, based on the comic book by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, is set in a world where superheroes are as vain and hedonistic as our world’s most outrageous reality TV star or Instagram influencer. But with the added element of superpowers, they can also be dangerous — and that’s before you consider Vought, the company behind it all, wants them to become military assets. Enter: “The Boys” — a hardscrabble group of ordinary intelligence operatives dedicated to making the Supes pay. Led by Bill Butcher (Karl Urban), the group certainly pantsed some of the heroes in the first season, but the second will see them on the run from the law and desperately trying to regroup and fight back against Vought.
While in hiding, Hughie (Jack Quaid), Mother’s Milk (Laz Alonso), Frenchie (Tomer Capon) and Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) try to adjust to a new normal, with Butcher nowhere to be found. Meanwhile, Starlight (Erin Moriarty) must navigate her place in The Seven as Homelander (Antony Starr) sets his sights on taking complete control. His power is threatened with the addition of Stormfront (Aya Cash), a social media-savvy new Supe, who has an agenda of her own. On top of that, the Supervillain threat takes center stage and makes waves as Vought seeks to capitalize on the nation’s paranoia. Dominique McElligott, Jessie T. Usher, Chace Crawford, and Nathan Mitchell return as the other members of the Seven — a corrupted take on the Justice League — as does Giancarlo Esposito as the CEO of Vought. Other new and returning cast members include Claudia Doumit, Goran Visnijc, Malcolm Barrett, Colby Minifie, Shantel VanSanten, Cameron Crovetti, PJ Byrne, and Laila Robbins.
Another new concept for the season will be weekly releases. Unlike Season 1, in which all episodes debuted on the same day, September 4th will see the first three episodes made available with the remaining five premiering weekly through October 9th. It is an interesting idea as it should keep us talking about the series week to week.
The Boys returns to Amazon on September 4th.
