‘Candyman’ Director Nia DaCosta Reportedly Set To Helm ‘Captain Marvel 2’

The second Captain Marvel film may finally have its director.
Deadline reports filmmaker Nia DaCosta of the upcoming Candyman remake will take the helm of the Marvel Studios production staring Brie Larson. She replaces Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck, who co-directed the first Captain Marvel film, but chose early on not to return. WandaVision story editor Megan McDonnell wrote the script.
Plot details are, of course, unknown. Considering the first film took place in the 1990s, it is possible the sequel will continue Carol Danvers’ (Larson) story out in space as she tries to help Skrull refugees find a home and, presumably, end the aggression of the Kree Empire. Indeed, the empire’s decision to sign a treaty with Xandar some twenty years after the events of Captain Marvel leads to the events of Guardians of the Galaxy. In fact, that film’s primary antagonist, Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace), has some history with Carol and the end of Captain Marvel suggests a confrontation between them is in the cards.
Alternatively, the Disney+ series WandaVision will feature Teyonah Parris as a grown up Monica Rambeau (played as a child by Akira Akbar in Captain Marvel) and it is possible McDonnell’s familiarity with that version of the character will come into play if Carol never made good on her promise to return to Earth.
Either story strand is fine starting point for the sequel, particularly as Carol’s lack of a home continues to be part of her character in the films. But either way, the reported arrival of DaCost suggests the film will ramp up pre-production soon. The film is scheduled for a July 8th, 2022 release, but with Marvel Studios’ calendar constantly shifting due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the film could end up debuting any time that year or even in 2023.
