Comedian Jim Gaffigan will be adding some mischief to The CW’ Stargirl.
EW reports the actor will voice the Thunderbolt — the fun-loving 5th Dimensional imp hidden in the purple pen and seemingly destined to team up with Mike’s (Trae Romano) friend Jakeem. According to the site, the character is described as a genie of sorts who grants wishes which are “more trouble than the wish-asker would ever expect.” Nevertheless, “the Thunderbolt’s heart is always in the right place, even if it is wounded by the friends he has lost throughout his long existence.”
Originally created by John Wentworth and Stan Aschmeier in 1940, the Thunderbolt was long the partner of the somewhat dim Johnny Thunder. But when Johnny began to suffer from Alzheimer’s in the 1990s, the Thunderbolt’s pen ended up in the possession of Jakeem Williams — aka Jakeem Thunder — in the pages of JLA. The new pair would continue into subsequent Justice Society of America titles.
Though mentioned by Mike in passing during the first season, Jakeem has not be cast.
Stargirl returns to The CW in 2021.
