Something For The Weekend

Welcome again, one and all. We once again bring you a selection of the more popular posts from the last week here at Comicon in our regular Saturday afternoon slot. Ten to takeaway helping keep you up to date with all the news and previews from comic book culture, gaming, TV and film:

1. We like to think that we are a site that shines a light on indie creators from far and wide and last week’s Super Sunday Kickstarter special did exactly that. We shone the spotlight in campaigns for crowdfunded comics like Blood, Skulls & Chrome (here) and Turning Roads: An Irish Folklore Comic Anthology (here), showing how diverse comics are on this popular platform. Well worth checking in on from time to time to see what new comics and new talent you can find there.
2. Richard Bruton brought news of a new Climate Change themed comic book project set up between the International British Council and the Philippines highlighting this global problem through comic art. Read all about it here.
3. The news that Plastic creators Doug Wagner and Daniel Hillyard are reuniting for new horror comedy Vinyl from Image Comics proved very popular. Here’s hoping that popularity translates to the comic book which you can catch a first look at here.
4. Our extended preview of Dynamite’s Vampirella and the Superpowers #4 was a hot preview this week too. Check it out here.
5. Returning to our list this week is Richard Bruton’s Monday afternoon deep preview of 2000 AD. Still the galaxy’s gates comic and we’re still one of the few sites covering this regularly. Read up on the latest Prog here.
6. Simon & Schuster continue in their quest for distribution monopolisation with AHOY Comics the latest publishers to have their comic books placed into bookstores by these publishing heavyweights. Read more about this new deal here.
7. It’s another big year for anniversaries and as well as Captain America turning 80, so too is Riverdale’s Archie Andrews. And Archie Comics are celebrating with new series, Everything’s Archie #1. Brendan M Allen brings you the news and a preview here.
8. Speaking about octagenarian Captain America, have you heard the news of the latest new Cap to join the ranks? Well, if not, James Ferguson brought us the news of a Great Depression-era Cap here. And I couldn’t think of anyone more prefect to illustrate it than Dale Eaglesham.
9. This week brought a new episode of Pennyworth to TV and Rachel Bellwoar gave us her review here.
10. This week has also seen the annual South By Southwest film festival being held and our own Gary Catig gave us a fist full of reviews like this one for Islands here.

And while the general consensus is that this is a far better version of Joss Whedon’s 2017 outing, you still can’t fault the score by Danny Elfman.
