Zumbado And Dee Finally Fight In A Preview Of The Next ‘Naomi’

by Erik Amaya

Naomi is taking the next week off. But when it returns, Zumabdo (Cranston Johnson) and Dee (Alexander Wraith) finally square off in a battle to decide whose training methods are better. Meanwhile, Naomi’s (Kaci Walfall) disc has once again gone missing and she considers leaving Port Oswego. Has all the time we’ve invested in the high school plot been for not? Will she and her unlikely surrogate fathers go on the road to prevent the town from facing the wrath of an Earth-29 threat?

This week’s episode, meanwhile, left us wondering if perhaps Zumbado will turn out to be Naomi’s biological father. It’s an easy fix to the story and gives Zumbado a very different role than his comic book counterpart. At the same time, though, it’s awfully cliched. Presenting him as an honorable man ready to train her on her parents behalf is more interesting. It also leaves just a little bit of room to doubt his story. Although, as Brutus also exists in the DC Comics Universe, it is possible Zumbado offered Naomi true memories and his concern has always been for her safety.

But even then, it makes his behavior up until now really strange.

Despite our quibbles with the episode, we do have to applaud the show for pivoting Zumbado as a character and finally offering Naomi a glimpse at her home reality half-way into the season. It’s one of those things that really needed to occur now and we’re glad the show delivered on that. Although, we also have to wonder why Zumabdo didn’t show Naomi what Earth-29 looks like right now. If she’s suppose to save that world, she should have some idea of its current status. Or, at least, what it was like when Zumbado left it. Maybe we’ll see some of that in the next episode even as it returns to some of the high school side of the story.

Naomi airs Tuesdays on The CW.
