Batwoman will not continue on The CW.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, showrunner Caroline Dries revealed the news on Twitter Friday afternoon, writing, “Just got the sad news that Batwoman will not be seeing [another season] … I am bummed, but full of gratitude. What an honor to make 51 episodes.”
The program starred Javicia Leslie as Ryan Wilder, a young Black woman whose chance encounter with Kate Kane’s batsuit forever alters her destiny. Now a costumed superhero, she picked up where Kate left off, befriending Luke Fox (Camrus Johnson) and Mary Hamilton (Nicole Kang) and dealing with Kate’s villainous twin sister Beth (Rachel Skarsten), who goes by the Carroll-inspired moniker of “Alice.”
The series never quite found the right footing. Originally starring Ruby Rose as Kate, the star quit shortly after the production went into lockdown during the early part of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the years since, Rose made it clear the culture around filming was too difficult for her to manage while still recovering from a terrible back injury. She also accursed former co-star Dougray Scott of abusive behavior.
Although it is a sad ending for a show that began with a lot of promise, it is further indication that the priorities of The CW are changing. Hopefully, it won’t effect the future of Legends of Tomorrow, which has not yet been renewed.
