‘Stargirl’ Turns A Corner
by Frank Martin
More than halfway into the third season and Stargirl is starting to turn a corner in its slow build. The first half was all about setting up mystery and deconstructing its characters. It’s done a pretty successful job at that, if at a relatively slow pace. Besides a handful of fight scenes — that were actually pretty excellent — this season has been uneventful compared to the previous two. That doesn’t make it bad. It just makes it different. And as this week’s new episode turns a corner into revealing several things, it will be interesting to see how the rest of the season plays out.
The bulk of this week’s episode focuses on the fact that Cindy (Meg DeLacy) had been hiding the Gambler’s laptop. Her defensive and secret of nature forces her to do this when she should have trusted her new teammates to help with her transformation. Meanwhile, Courtney (Brec Bassinger) continues to train Cameron (Hunter Sansone) in the use of his Icicle powers. Of course, all this comes to a head as the team is more distrustful of each other than ever. And this is happening while the big bad of the season is starting to be slowly revealed.
Dominoes that have been building up over the course of several episodes are finally starting to fall. There’s still a lot to cover. The entire nature of the season’s villain is still yet to be revealed, but there has been plenty to enjoy. The fight with Cindy was well done and to see all the different members of the JSA struggle with their own personal issues adds to the characterization of the show. If the season were to end now it would definitely be a lull, but there’s still a lot to go, and hopefully all of the foundational work that’s been done so far will pay off in the end.
Stargirl airs Wednesday’s on The CW.
