Wanda Sykes Delivers A Witty And Insightful Netflix Comedy Special
by Tito W. James
In her latest comedy special, I’m an Entertainer, Wanda Sykes explores the challenges of raising Gen Z teens in a hyper-charged political climate. The comedy special addresses the Insurrection, the Pandemic, and the rise of book banning, and tackles all of these issues with razor sharp wit.
There have been several prominent Black male comedians that have made a mess on stage by venting their own homophobia under the guise of comedy. The uncomfortable truth is that there is homophobia within the African American community and White Privilege within the LGBTQ+ community. As an openly Gay Black Woman in an interracial marriage, Wanda Sykes shows that the African American experience is not monolithic. Sykes is able to navigate the treacherous waters between minority groups and still deliver a punch line.
Some say it’s a hard time to be a comedian but it’s an even harder time to be a minority within a minority. Sykes has a lot of insight and wisdom and the courage to say it. I encourage people from every background to listen.
Wanda Sykes I’m an Entertainer is now streaming on Netflix.
