ENNIE Awards 2023: ‘An Unexpected Wedding Invitation’ Nominated For Best Adventure

by Anton Kromoff

Welcome to the table,

It’s that time of year again. The 2023 ENNIES are upon us, and I for one am delighted. For those who may not be familiar, the ENNIE Awards are an annual fan-based celebration of excellence in tabletop roleplaying gaming. What I love most about the Ennies is that they give game designers, creators, artists, and writers recognition for the tireless hours and creative genius that they put into their work.

Created in 2001, the awards have grown and expanded from online award recognition to an annual ceremony in Indianapolis Indiana at Gen Con. As the ENNIES have stated, “With award categories recognizing the components that make a game great, to the types of products fans have come to love, categories for fan-based websites and much more, the ENNIES are the best way for fans to acknowledge outstanding effort from and to say “thank you” to the creators, publishers, designers and artists who make this hobby great.”

To be awarded an ENNIE, or even get a nomination, is a huge honor for someone who creates in the TTRPG space, and easily one of our highest honors in the industry.

I’m going to do my best to provide you with insight into all the projects who have been nominated starting with the Best Adventure category.

The third nomination in the 2023 ENNIE Best Adventure category is An Unexpected Wedding Invitation published by Midnight Tower, a team that consists of Oxford-based individuals known as Tove and Erik, who have been players and storytellers of roleplaying games for more than 25 years.

Midnight Tower has currently released six printed books with adventures, published several stand-alone adventures, and run eight successful Kickstarter campaigns.

An Unexpected Wedding Invitation is a D&D 5e adventure that’s designed for a group of three to five 3rd-level characters but does that rad thing I think more games need to do where it includes scalable mechanics to suit any party level.

The adventure is a romantic mystery adventure inspired by the work of Jane Austen and can be used as the base for its own campaign or as part of a side quest to your regularly scheduled table adventures in any campaign or as a side quest. Some locations mean that the adventure works particularly well as a part of the Eastern Farraway Adventures (Also published by Midnight Tower) but the adventure can easily be adapted to suit other settings by an industrious storyteller.

The adventure itself contains a new monster known as the Goblin Queen and a new unique magic item known as the Ring of the Elven Court. It also contains detailed NPCs with background descriptions, agendas, and secrets, lots of legend and lore about the Argentïs Falls, and a selection of original high-quality color illustrations and artwork all packaged in 86 pages of romantic adventure.

Until next time, It isn’t what we say or think that defines us, but what we do… or the dice we roll.
