Between Superman & Lois and My Adventures with Superman, the Man of Steel is having a great time on television. Both shows are immensely different. They take place during completely different times of Superman’s life. But even more than that, the fact that one is animated while the other is live action allows My Adventures with Superman to do something different. Superman & Lois is more of a long form of storytelling. Other CW superhero shows took a monster-of-the-week type format. My Adventures with Superman is doing something similar, so they are able to cover a lot more ground in the mythology than its live-action counterpart.
This week’s episode saw the trio of Clark (Jack Quaid), Lois (Alice Lee), and Jimmy (Ishmel Sahid) get a real journalistic assignment from The Daily Planet. They are set to attend a party held by Tony Ivo. Lois is determined to get a real scoop during the party. What they uncover: Ivo has a very nefarious connection to the weapons that had been showing up in the city. As the man starts to become insane, he displays his new battle suit that he calls Parasite. He fights Superman and appears to beat him. But once Superman realizes that he can siphon off Parasite’s powers by not engaging him, Ivo is withered into a husk of a shell.
So far, Ivo has been one of the most compelling villains of the series. He had a little bit of Luthor’s flair to him as he ran his company, Amazo, which may return in the form of the classic villain that bears the same name. Until then, this was a great appearance by a radically different version of Parasite. In just four episodes a lot of Superman mythology has been covered. And the trio of Lois, Clark, and Jimmy works very well together as they share the lead. It will be interesting to see how this plays out since Jimmy might feel ostracized from Lois and Clark’s budding relationship, especially since Lois discovered Clark’s secret at the end of the episode.
My Adventures with Superman streams Fridays on Max.
