SDCC 2023: ‘Mortal Kombat 1’ Adds Li Mei, Baraka And Tanya To The Roster
by Sage Ashford
During San Diego Comic-Con, NetherRealm Studios introduced a new trailer for Mortal Kombat 1 that added three more characters to the roster. Mortal Kombat fans will remember both Tanya and Baraka, but the trailer also adds Li Mei, a character from the 3D era who made her first appearance in Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance.
In this new game, Tanya and Li Mei are members of the Umgadi, warrior priestesses of Outworld meant to protect the royal family. Meanwhile, Baraka in this timeline is a victim of the Tarkatan plague, a virus that changes people from the inside out until they are nothing more than flesh-craving monsters. Given Liu Kang was responsible for resetting the timeline, he’s got a lot of explaining to do.
Also revealed in this trailer are two new Kameo fighters, Goro and Darrius. With the game’s release fairly close though, the first wave of DLC fighters were also confirmed: Omni-Man, Ermac, Peacemaker, Quan Chi, Takeda, and Homelander. Essentially, the leaked list that appeared months ago was entirely accurate.
Mortal Kombat 1 launches for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Steam, Xbox Series, and the Epic Games Store on September 19th.
