Review: ‘Adventures Of Superman: Jon Kent’ #6 Lands With A Thud

The multiverse adventures of Jon Kent come to an end with issue #6. Unfortunately the young Superman’s latest mission ends just as it began… Poorly.

Tom Taylor, Clayton Henry, Jordie Bellaire, and Wes Abbott end their series with a whimper.

Jon Kent must face the evil version of his father. To face him one on one, he must turn Kal-El’s allies against him. Even if he can, he has to face a version of Superman with all the power and none of the morals. 

There’s a version of this story that works. One that would have seen a logical build up to a confrontation between Kal and Jon, with a satisfying conclusion. Instead, Taylor gives us a rushed series of confrontations, a weird and overly sentimental conversation between Jon and Kal, and the story suddenly stops. No climax or conclusion. It just stops. It’s simply not good or even remotely satisfying as a conclusion to this series.

Even that dialogue was extremely clunky and overly melodramatic. Nothing about it felt substantial, just eye-rolling. And worst of all, nothing interesting was done with Jon- he learned almost nothing, his very interesting new powerset was barely touched on, and he can’t even process what happened before jumping into November’s Titans event.

Henry and Bellaire’s art is the high spot of the issue. Henry is fantastic at conveying emotion on the character’s faces, and he balances that with the action of Jon’s rush to confront his father. Bellaire brings the art to life, especially as Jon uses his still undefined energy powers, making it glow as well as a film or animated version would.

Ultimately, this series feels like a failure. The plot fell apart the moment Injustice came into the picture, and never figured it back out. Multiple plot threads are unresolved. And in the end, it’s pointless, ending with no lasting effects to the characters or story. It started with promise, and just did not fulfill a bit of it.

This series just didn’t work, but it did at least have great art.
