NYCC 2023: The ‘Justice Ducks’ Assemble In December

by Erik Amaya

The Terror That Flaps In The Night may not be the easiest team player, but he’ll have to face a bevy of fellow heroes this holiday.

Justice Ducks, from Dynamite in December, is the next stage of Darkwing Duck’s comic book life. When faced with mysterious flying saucers threatening his beloved St. Canard, DW must accept he cannot handle this one alone and enlist the help of like-minded allies. The team: Gizmoduck, fitted with a suit of armor stacked with gadgets aplenty; Neptunia, a “fierce and formidable” fish-woman; Stegmutt, a “duck-turned-dino” possessing awe-inspiring strength; Morgana, a sorceress of Darkwing’s uneasy acquaintance; and, of course, Gosalyn. But those of us who remember Darkwing’s team-ups on the Disney Afternoon, sharing the spotlight is a big challenge for him Nevertheless, getting along is the only way for the team to restore order in the city.

The tale comes courtesy of writer Roger Langridge and artist Carlo Cid Lauro.

In a statement, Langridge said, “I’m a lifelong fan of the Disney Ducks as written and drawn by Carl Barks, so that style of storytelling is very much in my veins. I also have enormous fondness for the goofier end of superhero comics — 1960s Jimmy Olsen, Plastic Man, Metamorpho, Metal Men and so on. Tonally, these are the sort of notes I’d like to hit.”

Covers for the first issue includes Langridge’s take on Kevin Maguire‘s iconic Justice League #1 lineup shot, contributions from Mirka Andolfo and Francesco Tomaselli, and a “negative space” piece courtesy of Trish Forstner.

Justice Ducks #1 is set for release in December.
