Adult Animation Revolution: What We Can Learn From ‘Scavengers Reign’
by Tito W. James
Scavenger’s Reign is a prime example of taking a classic premise and upgrading it into something original. At its core, this is a castaway story where the crew are on a hostile planet rather than a mysterious island. Much like the TV series Lost, we’re thrown into the midst of things and have to piece together the mystery of how these space travelers became stranded in the first place.

Scavenger’s Reign is a winning blend between grounded Sci-fi and surrealism. The mysterious elements on the planet never lose their bewitching quality. The alien flora and fauna are like warped versions of our native plants, animals, and insects. The use of alien body-parts as improvised gadgets is brilliantly original and gives Scavenger’s Reign its own aesthetic identity within the wider Sci-fi genre.
The animators at Titmouse studios have outdone themselves and deliver hand drawn animation that looks feature film quality with every episode. Not every prestige adult animation series needs to have an Arcane-sized budget to make an impact. I hope that this series does really well and strikes a chord with critics who don’t normally watch animation. As we enter a new era of more dramatic adult animation, Scavenger’s Reign will serve as a reminder of animation’s creative potential.
