Review — ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ #41 Is Just Good Old Fashioned Super-Fun

The Gang War is in full swing across the Spider-Man family of titles. In Amazing Spider-Man #41, a familiar pair joins the fray, and it’s about to make Spider-Man’s mission much more difficult.

Zeb Wells, John Romita Jr., Scott Hanna, Marcio Menyz, and Joe Caramagna bring Kingpin and Typhoid to the war for New York.

Tombstone, Spidey and She-Hulk know that the only way they may be able to stop the war from escalating will require recruiting Wilson Fisk. Dealing with the former Kingpin and current White King is a deal with the devil though. It may be a tougher proposition than they expect- lucky for them, they’re tougher than anything Fisk can throw at them. Probably.

This issue really only takes place over about twenty minutes of real time, but it’s got enough to it that it’s not just satisfying but feels like it advances the plot. Wells has a great sense of humor throughout, and each beat between the characters feels realistic to them. The chaos in the second half of the issue makes sense given the circumstances, and it ends on a great cliffhanger. The only thing that doesn’t totally land right for me is Typhoid’s characterization, which is a little out there compared to where we saw her last.

Romita & Hanna’s line art continues to be the strongest they’ve done together in a long time. Though the Hellfire goons are little more than bowling pins here, Spider-Man, She-Hulk and Tombstone all dominate the page. The fight choreography is very good, and there’s a weight to the blows, especially between Kingpin and Tombstone. Menyz gives the page a glow that feels a little bit like there’s flames around them, on top of his normal great color work.
