Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs Kicking Off May 1, 2024

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, May 1, 2024. It’s New Comic Book Day this weekend, so I included a bunch of those titles as well. Remember, the comics are free to readers, but cost your local shop owners, so please pick up a couple floppies while you’re there on Saturday. Support local shops.

The Scale Trade #1, Magma Comix

Magma Comix titles are starting to hit the spinner racks. This one has a Steve Orlando script and art by Megan Huang. 

In a modern setting, dragons are an endangered species, threatened by poachers. A young idealist joins the federal agency tasked with managing dragon populations,  and he quickly discovers that the entire system is corrupt. After seeing firsthand the cruelty of the system, our newly radicalized dragon savior takes matters into his own hands.

Free Comic Book Day 2024: Investigators Class Action Sneak Peek #1, First Second Books

One of the things I really love about NCBD is that my kids (8 and 10) are actually excited about going to the local comics store. It’s usually a chore to drag them along, but this is the one day each year they get all worked up. This book is one of the reasons why.

Investigators is one of their favorite illustrated prose series. This FCBD offering pulls back the curtain a little as the Investigators are back… to school in the upcoming 8th book in John Patrick Green’s bestselling series. 

Bear Pirate Viking Queen #1, Image

“A blood-splattered story of conquest. Bears. Pirates. Vikings. And Queens—all battling for their claim to determine what the world will become.”

That is all Image tells us about the upcoming joint from writer Sean Lewis and artist Jonathan Marks Barravecchia. Honestly, that’s enough. 

Free Comic Book Day 2024: Snoopy Beagle Scouts Adventures #1, Andrews McMeel Publishing

There are so many titles this week, I had to pop one more into the featured section. If you’ve watched any of the Comicon Good Grief videos, you might already know that one of the video hosts on that series is a HUGE Peanuts fan. (His name rhymes with Schmrendan M. Allen.)

Anyhoo… Join Snoopy, Woodstock and the rest of the Peanuts gang as they camp out, explore the wild and have all kinds of laughs along the way.
