It’s time for Red Sonja to face some of the consequences for her adventuring.
The premise of the next Red Sonja series from Dynamite, Red Sonja: Death and the Devil, features an intriguing premise: what happens when the fallout of a sword-and-sorcery hero’s hacking-and-slashing comes back to bite them in the ass? That’s what Sonja is about to find out in September. After she killed the Sultan of Turan in Birth of a She Devil, the kingdom collapsed as serpent cults and opportunistic warlords attempted to fill the power vacuum left in the wake of Sonja’s decisions. Knowing the chaos is her doing, Sonja returns to find the Sultan’s heir and restore some semblance of order. Well, provided things go as plan.
Chronicling the She Devil with a Sword’s attempt to make amends are Birth of the She Devil writer Luke Lieberman and Vampirella: Dead Flowers. artist Alberto Locatelli.
“For some reason we just take it as a given that the hero kills the villain and then it’s happily ever after. That’s not how the world works,” Lieberman said in a statement. “There are always unintended consequences to battles and wars, personal or global. They are never clean or wrapped up with a bow, and if you take a life, you are responsible for whatever flows out of that action.”
That’s some great thematic fuel for one of Sonja’s adventures.
Supporting the first issue are covers from Joseph Michael Linsner, Celina, Moritat, and cosplayer Rachel Hollon.
Red Sonja: Death and the Devil #1 debuts this September in comics shops everywhere.
