Preview: ‘Johnny Red: The Hurricane’ — Garth Ennis And Keith Burns’ Wartime Epic Collected

by Richard Bruton

Finally colllected together – the complete Johnny Red saga will collect all of Garth Ennis and Keith Burns‘ epic wartime tales.

.

Created by Tom Tully and Joe Colquhoun and published in the classic British war comic Battle from 1977 to 1987, Johnny Red is one of the greats of classic Brit comics and the longest-running strip in the comic.

Starring Johnny ‘Red’ Redburn, it’s the unusual saga of a Brit air-ace who leads the Falcon Squadron of the Soviet Air Force, battling through the war and defending a homeland that’s not his against the Nazi invaders in World War II.

As part of the 50th-anniversary celebrations for Battle in 2025, The Treasury of British Comics will be reprinting the entirety of Garth Ennis and Keith Burns’ epic Johnny Red saga – including Johnny’s final story, publishing later in 2024 within the already announced Battle Action Vol 3 where the Johnny Red series runs in all 10 issues.

Hurricane is the first volume of The Treasury of British Comics presentation of the complete adventures of Johnny Red, all done in an oversized hardcover format.

Here’s what the Treasury PR has to say about it…

‘It follows ace aerial assassin Johnny ‘Red’ Redburn, and the battle-hardened pilots of Russia’s Falcon Squadron. As he leads the squadron through the Battle of Stalingrad, he must defend the city from waves of Nazi Messerschmitts… but Johnny and his fellow pilots become trapped behind enemy lines where they must survive one of the most terrible battles of the whole war.

‘However, their war is about to become far worse when they uncover a devastating secret that puts them in the sights of not just the Nazis – but their own side as well!’
