‘Metaphor: ReFantazio’ Story Showcase Video Highlights New Game From The Creators Of ‘Persona’

by Tito W. James

Metaphor: ReFantazio is the latest game from the creators of the Persona series and will take place in an original fantasy world. Players will take control of a dapper, androgynous protagonist and explore a world of many cultures and political intrigue.

In the official “story showcase” video we are introduced to a plot that kicks off after the king is assassinated by a charismatic military leader named Louis. However, before Louis can take control, the king’s face appears in the sky — reminiscent of the moon in The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask. The specter king casts an “election” spell so that whoever wins the hearts of the people will ascend to the throne.

The game is, in some ways, a mirror to our own contemporary anxieties and much like the Persona series, utilizes Jungian concepts like archetypes to inform gameplay. It remains to be seen how subtle a game literally titled Metaphor will be with its allegories, but the plot has a mythic quality combined with a unique art direction. The art team pulled from 1960s BritPop fashion and Hieronymus Bosch for monster designs.

With a stellar gaming legacy and bold new ideas, fans old and new should be excited for Metaphor: ReFantazio when it releases on October 11th, 2024.
