SDCC 2024: Max’s ‘The Penguin’ Is Bringing Gotham City’s Hottest Club To San Diego

by David Lewis

Attendees of this year’s San Diego Comic-Con will get a chance to beat the summer heat and chill at the Iceberg Lounge, courtesy of Max’s upcoming series The Penguin.

The city’s Gaslamp Quarter will be partially transformed into Gotham City in anticipation of the DC Comics-inspired series, which finds Colin Farrell reprising his role as the felonious feathered fiend from 2022’s The Batman.

On Friday, July 26th and Saturday, July 27th, Max is partnering with Giant Spoon to recreate Gotham’s infamous nightclub, the Iceberg Lounge, in the Bloom Nightclub near the convention center. This immersive, multi-room experience will offer free drinks, DJ sets, giveaways, exclusive video content, Oz’s iconic purple Maserati, photo opportunities, and more. But there’s another level to the criminal boss’ favorite hangout, in the form of a password-protected club-within-the-club called 44 Below.

Here’s the fine print. There are three ways to get a chance to receive an invitation to the Iceberg Lounge:

  1. You can register now on 1iota.com for an exclusive invitation.
  2. From July 25th through July 27th, select San Diego establishments will have a limited number of scratch-off tickets that could win entry to the Iceberg Lounge. Get your chance at Gaslamp Pizza, The Butcher’s Cut, Osteria Panevino, or Prohibition 1920.
  3. Starting July 25th, Max’s promotional Gotham Ice Truck will be parked near the convention center, and will offer free Slush Puppies. The cups will include a QR code, offering thirsty fans yet another chance to win an invitation.

Meanwhile, The Penguin panel arrives in Hall H on July 27th from 4:45 p.m. to 5:45 p.m. Panelists will include stars Farrell, Cristin Milioti, and Rhenzy Feliz, showrunner and executive producer Lauren LeFranc, executive producer Dylan Clark, and The Batman director Matt Reeves. They will also introduce the newest official trailer for the series.

Can’t make it to SDCC? You can still experience The Penguin on social media — the series will take over the @TheBatman social accounts — while Max and Snapchat are partnering on an augmented reality lens set up throughout San Diego.

“We are incredibly excited to tap into the rich and passionate fanbase in San Diego this year by introducing them to our new series, The Penguin,” said HBO and Max’s Pia Barlow in a press release. “With our in-world activations, fans will have the chance to engross themselves in the underground world of Oz Cobbs’s Gotham, picking up where we left off in Matt Reeves’ The Batman, as we look to generate excitement for the series premiering this September.”
