Jumping On — Series Premieres, One-Shots, And New Story Arcs For July 17, 2024

by Brendan M. Allen

One of the most frustrating things about finding new comics to read and enjoy is finding a good jumping on point. It can be confusing and disheartening to pick up a single issue from the middle of an arc without having the context of the previous chapters.

With that in mind, here are a few New Story Arcs, Series Premieres, and One-Shots that caught my eye for this upcoming New Comic Book Day, Wednesday, July 17, 2024.

Featured Series Premieres, One-Shots, and New Story Arcs:

Luchaverse: Catalyst #1, Massive

I interviewed Diego Valenzuela about this book a couple weeks ago. If you love superheroes, lucha, action, horror, mystery… pick this one up.

The world’s most famous luchadores battle in the ring by day, and serve humanity as monster hunters and world protectors by night. Masked Republic Comics and Massive Publishing bring back the glory and tradition of real-life lucha libre stars in comics, setting the stage for a new era of epic genre-bending action in a shared universe.

The Last Wardens #1, Mad Cave Studios

Danielle Pryer has an alcoholic father and a hole in her wallet. Her life in the rustic town of Bleakwood goes from bad to worse when her long-lost brother, Bruce, returns from the Vietnam War, plagued by a mysterious and monstrous mutation. He is also being hunted by an incompetent team of paranormal misfits, which makes Bleakwood the new ground zero of a supernatural battle that will determine the fate of the entire planet.

Biker Mice from Mars #1, Oni Press

Mars! Mice! Motorcycles!

The Nacelleverse takes us back to the early nineties with an all new, all adrenaline adventure for the free-wheelin,’ butt-kickin’ animation icons who ride the Red Planet’s hardest roads.

Best friends Throttle, Modo, and Vinnie were just three anthropomorphic, motorcycle-riding mice who called Mars home . . . and were always bad to the bone. But when the ruthless Plutarkians stage a mass invasion to strip their planet of its precious resources, their antiauthoritarian streak is going to turn into a full-blown insurgency.

Only the Biker Mice from Mars can prevent the mass destruction of Earth’s neighbor . . . and the freedom of our entire solar system may just hang in the balance.
