The Gacha RPG Craze Continues With ‘Neverness To Everness’
by Sage Ashford
Hotta Studio, best known for their work on Tower of Fantasy, and Perfect World Games have announced their next project: Neverness to Everness. The game invites players to the metropolitan city of Hethereau, a city where humanity has grown used to the supernatural, and players use their Esper powers to explore it.
Just like battle royales at the end of the last decade, gacha RPGs have seemingly become the hot new genre for the 2020s. What could’ve just been miHoYo‘s thing very quickly became everyone’s thing, between titles like Tower of Fantasy and Wuthering Waves. I’d say at least the urban fantasy thing is new, but then there’s Zenless Zone Zero and Project MUGEN, announced last year.
The big thing that seems to make this game stand out: the developers intend to make urban life part of the main storyline. Perfect World Games make mention of the ability to buy and modify sports cars, purchasing and re-designing houses, and managing businesses.
Cool as it looks, though, I still can’t get over how much of this game’s UI looks exactly like Genshin Impact, just with a city setting. There’s some really cool stuff in the later parts of the trailer as they get into the action that is different — especially when it comes to the more serious music and the horror-like ways they approach the dungeons.
Plus, it’s still early days as there’s no confirmed release date. Maybe this is all mostly placeholder stuff and the full game will look completely different? Or maybe all the urban stuff will carry the game, as there really aren’t that many urban open-world games out there. Since Watch_Dogs fell, the entire genre basically belongs to Grand Theft Auto again. I’ll certainly wind up giving it a chance for that reason alone.
Neverness to Everness is scheduled to release for PlayStation 5, PC, Android, and iOS. Pre-register for the game here.
